Door won't close

Safely, right now

  1. Don't keep hitting the button. Repeated tries can do more damage than the first fault.

  3. Leave the safety sensors near the floor as they are: never tape them or bypass them.

Plenty of houses in Malvern still open the wood or early steel door they were built with, often on extension springs. Those doors deserve a technician who knows them: how to true a sagging section, add safety cables, replace worn pulleys, and bring the hardware up to date without losing the look of the house. Calls from Malvern West are covered too.

The fix, explained · Malvern

What is the door doing?

EmergencyTorsion Spring ReplacementThe door starts to rise, gets about the height of your knee, then shudders and reverses.

The fix

The finished result is a door that behaves the way a good garage door should: it lifts by hand with light effort, stays where you leave it at mid-height, closes softly and lets the opener run with little strain. Reaching that point involves measuring the door, choosing a matched spring, winding it to the correct turns and…

Until then

  1. When a spring breaks, the safe approach for the household is to leave the door where it is, keep people and vehicles clear, and avoid running the opener, which can damage the top section, the trolley or the gear drive.

  2. Pull the manual release only when the door is fully closed unless a technician asks otherwise; a door disconnected while partly open can move on its own if the springs are out of balance.

EmergencyOff-Track Garage Door ResetA delivery van backed into the shop's overhead door this afternoon.

The fix

The finish of an off-track reset matters as much as the re-seating. Once the rollers are home and the track is true, the door is disconnected from the opener and moved by hand through its whole travel while every roller is watched in its rail.

Until then

  1. Never run the opener on a door that is off its track or hanging crooked; every cycle drives the racked door harder into the rails and can pull the track from the wall or tear a hinge.

  2. Pull the manual release only when the door is fully closed unless a technician asks otherwise; a door disconnected while partly open can move on its own if the springs are out of balance.

EmergencyGarage Door Cable ReplacementThere was a sharp crack from the garage, and when you went to look the door had dropped on one side and jammed.

The fix

Which counterbalance your door has shapes the job. Torsion doors carry a spring on a shaft above the opening, and the cables wind onto grooved drums at each end; the technician winds the spring down with steel bars, swaps the cables, sets the drums and winds it back up.

Until then

EmergencyExtension Spring ReplacementYou pulled the red cord to open the door during a power cut and it barely moved.

The fix

What you have afterwards is a door that behaves like a much lighter object. Both corners leave the floor together, the door holds still when you stop it at waist height, and it settles onto the floor instead of slamming.

Until then

Book soonEmergency Release RepairSomeone pulled the cord last spring to get a car out during an outage, and the door has never properly rejoined the opener.

The fix

Beyond the repair, this service leaves every adult in the house able to use the release confidently. You see the handle pulled straight down with the door shut, the door lifted by its handle or a gripping point away from the panel joints, and the trolley clicked back together by pulling the cord toward the opener or running one…

Until then

  1. Pull the release with the door fully closed whenever possible, and keep the opening clear as you do.

  2. Lift a door by its handles or the gripping points on the panel face, never at the joint between sections, which closes as the door bends around the track.

Book soonGarage Door Opener Diagnosis and RepairThe door goes up perfectly.

The fix

What you get from the visit is more than a working door. You get told, in plain words, what was wrong and why it happened: a gear that had run dry for years, a sensor knocked out of line by a snow shovel, a wall control left in lock mode by a visiting grandchild.

Until then

  1. Pull the release with the door fully closed whenever possible, and keep the opening clear as you do.

  2. Never drive a vehicle at a closed door to get out; the door collapses and the stored tension in the counterbalance is released.

What the census means at the door

58%

Older homes. About 58% of homes in Toronto were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Extension springs are common on older doors, and they should carry a safety cable through the middle so a broken spring is held rather than flung. Adding those cables is a small job the technician checks for and offers on any older door he services.

23%

Single-detached houses make up about 23% of homes in Toronto (2021 Census).

Townhouse rows generally have a narrow single door on each unit, with shared walls on both sides. Noise from a chain opener or dry rollers carries straight into the neighbour's home, so quiet belt-drive openers and nylon rollers are a popular and considerate choice here.

Get in touch about your garage door in Malvern.

A phone call to us from Malvern gets a real conversation, not a script. We ask about the door, suggest what might be going on, and arrange a visit. What we hold back is the number: that comes after the technician has stood in front of the door and measured what it needs.

Toronto

  • Explained on the spot. As each part is checked, the technician tells you what it shows and what it means for the door as a whole.

  • Tidiness as standard. Old springs, cables and packaging leave with us, and the workspace is swept. A clean finish is part of every visit.

  • Options at your pace. Hear the choices, ask your questions, take the time you need. The work starts when you say so and not before.

Which fix fits?

IfThe manual lock bar no longer lines up with the slot in the track.

ThenManual lock realignment.

Doors shift over time; adjusting the bar or the track slot restores a lock that seats without forcing.

IfThe T-handle is loose and the key turns without engaging.

ThenLock handle and cylinder replacement.

Worn cylinders and handles are replaced as a set so the door is secure again.

IfThe manual lock is still fitted on a door that now has an opener.

ThenLock disable.

An engaged manual lock can stall the opener; it should be removed or fixed in the open position.

IfWatching from inside as the door opens, you can see the gap between the second and third panels open up on one side as they turn the corner into the ceiling…

What comes back is a door that moves as a single piece.

Asked and answered

Advice · (289) 301-8323

What is the board test?

It is the contact-reversal check. A short length of 2x4 lies flat on the floor in the middle of the opening and the door is closed from the wall button. When the bottom edge meets the wood, the door should halt and travel back up without help. Passing shows the opener's down-force and travel limits are set to back off from something solid. The technician never substitutes a hand or foot for the board.

Should I choose a fin on the wood stop or a one-piece vinyl stop?

If the wood stop is sound, straight and not buried in paint, a new fin nailed to its face is the simpler choice and keeps the look of the trim. If the stop is cracked, soft or has been painted many times, a one-piece vinyl stop replaces it entirely, needs no paint and cannot rot. The technician checks the stop and recommends one or the other on site.

Why should the opener never run with the manual lock engaged?

Because the opener is strong enough to lift a door heavier than a person, and it has no way of knowing a bar is in the track. It pulls, the bar bends, the lock body tears at its screws, the section can crease and the opener's gear or trolley takes the shock. Opener makers ask for manual locks to be disabled or removed when a motor is installed for exactly this reason.

Can I replace just the one roller that looks bad?

One roller can be changed on its own, and sometimes that is the sensible stopgap after a wheel breaks. The better result comes from a full set, because the other wheels have done the same number of cycles and are close behind, and mixing new with old, or nylon with steel, leaves the door running unevenly and sounding different on each side. A matched set also lets the technician set every top fixture and check every hinge in one pass.
