Photo-Eye Sensor Alignment or Replacement in Toronto
On bright mornings the door will not close, then by lunchtime it behaves itself. The garage faces the low sun, and the light reaches straight across the floor to one of the little black sensors.

Never bypass, tape over or relocate the sensors to make a door close; a door that reverses is reporting something worth fixing.
In plain words
Some sensor problems keep a schedule. A receiving eye that faces the low sun on winter mornings is flooded with light and loses the beam until the sun moves on, and a lens that frosts overnight in an unheated garage clears itself by noon. The service sorts these out for good: the sensors are swapped side to side so the receiver faces away from the light, or a small shade is fitted, and lenses and brackets are cleaned and reset above the line where slush collects. The door then closes at any hour of the day and in any month.
How the visit goesThe small light on one of the sensors near the floor has gone dark, or it flickers when someone walks past the track. The other one glows steadily. The door refuses to close from the car.

How the visit goes

- 1
Reading the two small lights
Most sensor pairs carry an indicator on each side, though some older models light only the receiver, so the technician checks that model's own chart first. On most openers the sending eye shows one colour and the receiving eye another, and both should glow without a flicker. If the sending light is steady and the receiving light is dark or blinking, the beam is not landing where it should: misalignment, an obstruction or a dirty lens. If both are dark, the pair has no power, pointing up the wire to a cut, a loose terminal or reversed connections. The technician also nudges each bracket gently while watching the light; a flicker on touch means a loose mount.
- 2
Proving it with the two tests
No sensor job is finished on a steady light alone. The door is closed from the wall control and from a remote, and while it is on its way down an object is passed through the beam; the door must stop and return to fully open. Then a 2x4 is laid flat on the floor under the centre of the door and the door is closed onto it; it must reverse on contact. Both are repeated, the opener's diagnostic light is confirmed clear, and any app or hub reporting a sensor code is refreshed. The customer watches the tests so the normal behaviour is seen, not described.

Two lights to glance at
You leave knowing what normal looks like at the floor. Most sensor pairs carry a small indicator on each side, often in different colours for sender and receiver, though some older pairs light only the receiver; the model's own chart tells you what steady and flickering mean. A dark or flickering light on the receiving side means the beam has been lost, usually because a bracket was bumped or something is in the path, and two dark lights mean the pair has lost power along the wire. A glance at those lights before calling anyone tells you most of what the technician would look at first, and often the fix is moving whatever is leaning on the bracket.

- Wire connectors
- Matched photo-eye sensor pair
- Receiving-eye sun shade
- Insulated wire staples
What affects the quote
- 1
Corrosion reaching the head unit
Where salt and water have travelled up the wire to the terminals, or the sensor terminals on the board are damaged, the repair extends beyond the pair and that is set out separately.
- 2
Winter conditions on the day
Snow and ice packed against the brackets, a frozen bottom seal or a frozen floor where anchors must go all add a little clearing and care before the sensor work itself can start.
- 3
Type of kit
Some replacement kits contain only the two sensors with connectors, while others include brackets and a full length of wire. The kit that suits the opener and the state of the existing hardware is what is quoted.

Photo-Eye Sensor Alignment or Replacement: questions
Is it all right to keep using the door until the visit?
Use the door in a way that keeps you in control. If the opener closes only while the wall button is held, do that only while you can see the whole doorway and nobody is near it. Otherwise close the door first if you can, then move it by hand with the manual release, and get help if it feels heavy or binds. Keep children and pets clear during any test. A door that reverses is being cautious on your behalf.
Why does it only misbehave on sunny mornings?
Sunlight reaching into the receiving lens can overwhelm the infrared beam from the sending sensor, so for an hour or two the opener acts as if the path is blocked. Garages that face the low sun in winter see it most. The cure is to exchange the two sensors' positions so the receiver no longer looks toward the light, or to fit a small shade over the receiving lens. Once that is done the time of day stops mattering.
Could the door's force setting be the real reason it reverses?
Sometimes. The opener also backs up when it meets more resistance than its force setting allows: an iced seal, a limit that drives the door into the slab, rollers stiff with cold. From the driveway that looks identical to a beam problem. Timing is a clue, not proof, since a flickering beam can reverse the door partway and severe binding can trigger a force reversal right at the start; the sensor lights and diagnostic pattern settle which it is. The technician checks both so the right thing is fixed.

What the census means at the door
58%
Older homes. About 58% of homes in Toronto were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.
Wood door frames in an older house settle and swell over the decades, which can leave a door rubbing on one side. Rather than forcing the opener, the technician trues the tracks, adjusts the jamb seals and sets the door so it travels freely again.
23%
Single-detached houses make up about 23% of homes in Toronto (2021 Census).
Where most homes are townhouses, condos or apartments, garage doors are often shared: a single overhead door or gate serving an underground or common garage. Those doors run on commercial operators built for constant use, and their upkeep is usually arranged through the building's management.
